Bulimia nervosa afflicts approximately 4% of women and 0.5% of men in the US. Nearly 4% of those suffering from bulimia will die from the disease and nearly all struggling with the illness experience serious medical and/ or emotional effects. — Alexis Conason Psy.D.
As mentioned in a previous post, therapy is not the only thing that a bulimic individual needs to feel better. It is essential at this time in your life to start becoming picky with the foods and supplements that you consume. After all, the eating disorder took a toll not only on your mental health but also on your physical health, and so it seems fair to focus on strengthening your body inside and out.
One of the essential tools you can get your hands on quickly is a probiotic. Various companies produce it in pill form nowadays, and a bottle can be bought either online or offline.
In truth, the living microorganisms can act as your initial line of defense against the harmful bacteria in the gut that threatens to harm the rest of your body. Due to the foods and drinks you digest, the latter tends to germinate and cause you to feel ill often.
You can ideally turn the situation upside down by taking a supplement that has live active culture once or twice a day. Doctors rarely prevent their patients from taking probiotics too, considering they genuinely have a lot of benefits. The only issue is that, with the number of brands launching their products these days, it’s quite challenging to obtain the real ones.
Instead of telling you which company to go to, though, it seems better to share a couple of ways to test probiotics at home.
Method #1: Using Milk
The decisive point about this technique is that you can prepare the materials and finish the work in minutes. You don’t need to learn complicated ideas either because all you must do is wait for a chemical reaction to occur.
Step 1: Drop The Capsules In The Milk
Pour four ounces of milk in a glass before dropping two to four supplements in it. Although it may be better to use a measuring cup for accuracy, you may estimate the volume with a teacup. The milk should be cold as well to reduce the possibility of heat ruining the assessment.
Step 2: Leave The Mixture For Up To Two Days
Bring the container to a spot in the house that has a neutral temperature. The ideal time when you can touch the vessel again is after 48 hours – no more, no less. The microorganisms in the capsules have probably dispersed by then and reacted with the liquid.
Step 3: Check The Outcome
It is easy to tell that the probiotics are in motion once you see that the milk resembles a yogurt now. Meaning, the former produces digestive enzymes, thanks to the live active culture. In case you don’t detect even a hint of curdling, you must consider changing your supplements into something that works.
Feel free to repeat the steps above for any brand you have.

Method #2: Using A Home Testing Kit
The end goal for this procedure is to figure out if the supplements you’ve taken indeed contain live microorganisms. Testing a probiotic with a home testing kit is effortless since the lab experts will perform the valuation. Below are the steps to follow.
Step 1: Obtain The Stool Sample
There is no shortcut available here, but you may feel satisfied in knowing that a tiny specimen is enough. Hence, once you are done doing #2, take the swab that comes with the set and swipe it on your used tissue paper to get a stool sample.
It may be best to bring the entire kit with you in the bathroom. This way, you won’t need to carry your specimen outside for your housemates to see.
Step 2: Place Your Swab Inside The Liquid Vessel
Right after swabbing the stool sample, drop it in the container that the company has prepared. Not all probiotic testing sets are the same, but they all have a pre-mixed liquid included to the kit. It is supposed to keep the specimen testable; that’s why you should not throw it away.
Step 3: Close The Tube Tightly
When you have the sample secured inside the vessel, seal it well to prevent leaking from taking place. Though some kits may not require taping the lid, you should still ask a representative to be sure about it.
Step 4: Send It To The Company For Laboratory Examination
Read the instructions enclosed in the package regarding the exact mailing address for your specimen. Failing to transport it to the proper location may entail that the stool sample will no longer be useful. The worst-case scenario, therefore, is that you may never know if there are probiotics in your body.
Step 5: Wait For The Results
Give the manufacturer a week or two to assess the presence or absence of living microorganisms in your sample. While waiting may be boring to you, try to acknowledge that the company caters to thousands of clients like you. For this reason, sending you a detailed report may genuinely take some time.

Understanding how to test probiotics doesn’t need to be exhausting. The first method is valuable when you wish to evaluate the existence of live active culture in the supplement before taking it. The second one, on the other hand, lets you identify the probiotics within your system after ingesting them.
Decide which technique may be useful for you so that you can start taking care of your gut health with probiotics. Good luck!
